Molecular profile
DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide; INN emideltide) is a linear nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu (WAGGDASGE). It was first isolated and characterised in 1977 from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits held in an electrically induced sleep state, after it was found to promote slow-wave (delta) EEG activity in recipient animals. This product is the synthetic peptide.
DSIP-like immunoreactivity has been reported in the hypothalamus, limbic system and pituitary as well as in peripheral tissues. The peptide has been examined in rabbit, rat and mouse studies of EEG and sleep architecture, stress responses, thermoregulation and neuroendocrine modulation. No gene, precursor protein or dedicated receptor has been identified, and published findings on its sleep-related activity are inconsistent, so it remains an open question in neuropeptide research. It is rapidly degraded by aminopeptidases in vitro.
Supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial.
