KPV

KPV is the tripeptide Lys-Pro-Val, corresponding to residues 11–13 at the C-terminus of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a short, linear, unmodified peptide with a free N-terminus and C-terminal acid, and is one of the smallest melanocortin-derived fragments studied for biological activity.

KPV is used as a minimal fragment that retains part of the anti-inflammatory activity described for α-MSH. Published work has shown that it is taken up by intestinal epithelial and immune cells through the proton-coupled oligopeptide transporter PepT1, and that it attenuates NF-κB and MAPK activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in cultured cells. It has been investigated in murine colitis models, including chemically induced and T-cell transfer models, where its activity was also examined in melanocortin-1 receptor signalling-deficient mice.
