Molecular profile
Thymosin Alpha-1 (INN: thymalfasin) is a synthetic 28-amino-acid peptide with an acetylated N-terminal serine and a free C-terminal acid. Its sequence corresponds to the N-terminal fragment of prothymosin alpha; the peptide was first isolated and sequenced in 1977 from thymosin fraction 5, a calf thymus extract.
In the research literature, thymosin alpha-1 is used as a tool for studying innate and adaptive immune signalling. Published work has examined its effects on dendritic-cell activation through Toll-like receptor pathways, including TLR9/MyD88-dependent signalling, on T-cell differentiation and Th1/Th2 cytokine profiles, and on host responses in rodent models of fungal infection such as experimental aspergillosis. It is also used in in-vitro studies of antigen-presenting-cell function and immune regulation.
Supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial.
