Molecular profile
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. It consists of the endogenous tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) extended at the C-terminus by a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide, the same motif used in the related ACTH-derived peptide Semax.
In vitro, Selank has been reported to inhibit enkephalin-degrading enzymes present in serum. In rodent research it has been examined for effects on the expression of genes involved in GABAergic neurotransmission, on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus, and on monoamine content and metabolism in the brain, and it is used in behavioural pharmacology paradigms in rats and mice. These studies make it a tool compound for work on tuftsin-derived regulatory peptides, enkephalinase activity and neuropeptide-mediated gene regulation.
Supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial.
