Molecular profile
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, in which the adrenocorticotropin fragment ACTH(4-7) is extended at its C-terminus by a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide. It was developed as an analogue of the melanocortin fragment ACTH(4-10) (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly), with the C-terminal Arg-Trp-Gly replaced by Pro-Gly-Pro.
Published work has compared the enzymatic stability of Semax with that of ACTH(4-10), including studies of N-terminal degradation by rat blood enzymes. In neurochemical research, Semax has been investigated for its effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB, with altered expression reported in the rat hippocampus, and it has been studied in vitro as an inhibitor of enkephalin-degrading enzymes in serum. It is used in rodent studies of melanocortin-related peptide signalling, neurotrophin regulation and peptide metabolism.
Supplied as a sealed, lot-numbered vial with a lot-matched Certificate of Analysis (HPLC purity and MS identity).
