Epitalon

Epitalon (epithalon, AEDG) is a synthetic linear tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly and free N- and C-termini. It was developed from amino-acid analysis of epithalamin, a peptide preparation extracted from the bovine pineal gland, and is a small, highly polar peptide carrying two acidic side chains.

Most of the published literature on the peptide comes from a single St Petersburg gerontology group. It has been reported to induce telomerase activity and telomere elongation in cultured human somatic (fetal fibroblast) cells, and has been examined in rodent studies of age-associated biomarkers, spontaneous tumour incidence and lifespan, as well as in work on pineal melatonin secretion. Independent replication of many of these findings remains limited, and the peptide is primarily of interest as a tool in telomere-biology and pineal-peptide research.
