Kisspeptin

Kisspeptin here refers to kisspeptin-10 (metastin 45–54), the C-terminal decapeptide Tyr-Asn-Trp-Asn-Ser-Phe-Gly-Leu-Arg-Phe-NH2 of the human KISS1 gene product. It is the shortest endogenous kisspeptin and shares the C-terminal Arg-Phe-amide motif needed for receptor activation with longer forms such as kisspeptin-54.

Kisspeptins were identified in 2001 as the endogenous ligands of the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR54, now designated KISS1R. Kisspeptin-10 is widely used as a reference agonist in KISS1R pharmacology, including studies of Gq/11 coupling, phospholipase C activation and intracellular calcium mobilisation, and in neuroendocrine research on the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, where rodent studies showed that kisspeptin stimulates GnRH release in a GPR54-dependent manner. It is also used in studies of KISS1 as a metastasis-suppressor gene product.
